Rationale

Over the past few years I have learned many valuable skills from collecting evidence to help me plan an idea to practical skills. One of the things I have learnt is how to set up a tripod and camera. This includes setting the white balance and adjusting the tripod efficiently. This has been very useful as I would not been able to film by myself if I did not know how to do both of these things. I have also learnt how to research correctly and find primary and secondary to support and guid my ideas. Im amble to collect primary data by creating surveys, doing vox pops, focus group, interviewing people ect. This helps me get an idea of what certain types of audience are interested in and help me form my target audience. Collecting secondary data help give me ideas and I can use the information in my film/advert/documentary. I have also learnt a range of editing skills that can be used to make my videos more interesting, clear, cinematic and informative. Learning how to use photoshop and after effects have allowed me to make good quality movie posters, effects, and add more detail and special effects to my footage. Learning about sound, lighting and camera angles have helped me film more efficiently and abled me to make my films appear better and more or less dramatic.

Project Concept

For my final major project I want to make a short video on fashion on style. The short will be 3-5 minuets long and will feature different interviews in various parts of London. The film will including and interview with a designer and peoples opinion on fashion and the things that influence their fashion sense.

Evaluation

I will evaluate my work as I complete a section. I will check if I have filmed everything that I needed to film, if I finished it in time, was the sound lighting good etc.

Presentation

Once my short film is fished I will show it to the class in a dark room on a projector screen. My film will put my film on youtube as it very accessible and millions of people go on there everyday so it has a more likely exposure rate. I will also put snipers of my film on Instagram and put the video on my blog so that other bloggers or people that read my blog can see it. I could also show it in a museum as an exhibition that people could watch as they walk round and look at different products.

Initial ideas for my short film

I want my short my short film to be about fashion, partially in London. I want to also show my interest in fashion as well as what it means to other people. It would be interesting If i could interview a designer and film some of there clothes in the studio as well as some of the fitting process. I would also like to show different types of style and the meaning it has to certain people. I would like the style of my short film to be a documentary.

Proposed research sources

The research sources I will use for my FMP will be social media platforms, as well as online blogs, fashion statistics, etc. My primary research will include vox pops, interviews, surveys, focuse groups, questionnaires.

Target Audience

My primary target audience is lower and middle class female's between 15-45.I have choose this target audience because Its the group of people that are most interested in fashion and the industry targets this age group. The people shown in my film are also all female and consist of different ages. My secondary target audience is fashion lovers both male and female 15+, lower and middle class as my film is about styled will e intriguing to choose into fashion.

Evaluation

I will evaluate and reflect on my work every week when I caplet a section of it. I ill write down all my initial goals for the week and then write what I actually did. If I did not compete what I had originally planned to do I will rite and think about how that will effect my work and note down what I will do moving forward. I will reflect on feedback I get from focus groups and interviews, surveys and do and use them to alter my idea so that it appeals to the target audience. During the process of my film I will keep checking back to make sure the footage I get reflects what I was originally trying to show in my film, style and what influences different peoples style. When receiving feedback from peers I should use it to make my film better so that it is more interesting and easy for the audience follow. Once complete something I will evaluate the positive factors and then write what I could of done better and how it would of positively or negatively effect my short film.

Mind Map

PRIMARY RESEARCH

survey

I did a survey to help me decide certain things for my short film. All of my responses were women and it would of been nice to see some opinions from someone other than just females. Because of this I decided to stick with my target audience being Fashion lovers but my secondary target audience being females 15-40 lower and middle class. From my survey result I have decided that I should defiantly use a mixture of females that are all different ages. I have also decided to stick with my idea of doing a documentary rather than a scripted film.

Risk Assessments

WEEK1

Planning for my short film. I have made mind maps to help me plan for my short fil. I have also thought about what type of film I want to be ( a documentary) and how I will film it. I have considered doing vox pops and short interviews throughout the film.

WEEK2

Primary research

I have made a survey to help find out what my audience would like to see in my short film and help me make my mind up about things. I have also done an interview with a young steen and a matured woman asking them both what style means them and what influences their style. I have done a focus group with some people who have different opinions on style and what influences their style.

WEEK3

For my secondary research I have watched four films. Dior and I, The Dressmaker, Bill Cunningham, New York and Valentino, the Last Emperor. I have evaluated the films as well as the film posters and noted what I could possibly use in my film that is similar to the films I have watched.

WEEK4

Put up a notice on my social media saying what my film is about and asking If anyone wants to the feature in it. As a result of this I have chosen a transgender models to do a interviews in my sort film swell as a friend who is willing to talk about her street style. I have also book myself for Pakistan Fashion Week and for an end of year fashion design/film/photography exhibition to put in my film in-between the interviews.

WEEK5

I have now found three different people to interview for my film, A designer, transgender model and a student. They all have different style sense sand do different things so I think it will be quiet good to capture the differences in terms of style. I attended Pakistan fashion week and decided that I do not want to use a lot of the footage in my film as it is not quiet what I thought it would be and doesn’t go with my planning.

WEEK6

The model is unable to the interview with me and the designer has to reschedule to a later date which will not be in time. Because of this I decide to cancel the interview of the student as it doesn’t make sense on its own. I have decided to do vox pop style interviews at the fashion exhibition tomorrow as I don’t have time find people to do more interviews.

WEEK7

I have filmed products and photography at the event as well as asked people about their personal style and what influences it. I have also done some shots of peoples outfits to add to my film. I have shown the film to the class who have given me feedback on it which I can consider when finishing and making changes to my film.

WEEK8

I have edited my film and made a poster for it, which I have evaluated. I have also evacuated my film.

Development

Instead of asking lot of different questions I have decided to change to one so that the audience can see the variety of style and all the different inspiration that comes from different people. The question that I will use will be: What influences your fashion style. I will encourage the interview to mention the fashion style and included the things that influences and effect it. They can also talk about how there style has changed over a certain time period.

I have decided not to use the footage from Pakistan fashion week in my short film because it specifically focuses on one type of culture rather than one type of culture mixed with other cultures like I thought it would be. In my planning I say that I want to make a film which showcases different types of style and not just one. The footage and items on display were defiantly film worthy but they just didn’t fit in my film

One of the problems I have is that my model has cancelled on me the designer has to reschedule the interview to a later date. This means that my whole plan doesn't work. The only thing I can now think of is to just film the exhibition or to film the exhibition and do mini interviews and about there personal style and what influences it.

This is the feedback I got after showing my film to the class.

Poster

My poster has three different images on it. One that shows the top half one that shows the middle and one that shows the bottom (shoes). They are three different people each with different senses of style. I felt by using multiple images instead of one it would really represent what my film was trying to show. The title is in all caps so that it can be seen clearly and the font is white as you often see white font in fashion, it looks elegant. I put 'Style a film by Sharn Battles' to make it more documentary like. At the bottom it says coming spring/summer 2017. I felt like this is actually apropiate on this poster as it is a film about fashion and new collection come either spring summer or autum winter.

Film

Evaluation

Sound

One of the things my peers said in my feedback is that some of my sound quality was not clear, so I used effects to try and cancelled out the loud ambient noise in the background.

I added music to my short film to make it less boring and replace the ambient noise when I was not interviewing people. I feel like the music suits the style of my film. I feel like the quality of the sound could of still been improved. Maybe I could of shot the interviews in a different locations so that the was not as much background noise.

Lighting.

All the light that I used in my short film was natural. I feel like it suited the style of limas it was a documentary and acton film so dramatic lighting would of not worked very well.

Shot types

Although I used a few different shots during my documentary like medium shots, close ups, high angles etc .I also like that most of my film was shot hand held because it adds a documentary feel to it. I think I could of added different types such as long shots and wide angles just to make the film that bit more interesting and keep the audience engaged.

Although my audience seem to be able to know what my documentary was about and follow he story easily I could of done a voice over at the begging saying that I want to find out about as well as show different people styles and the things and people that influence their style.

Acting/costume

Because I was making a documentary I did not hire actors or have any costumes, Idid however show different peoples outfits and pan down so that the audience could see what they ere wearing. My film was about style so I wanted the people in interviews to dress how the would on a normal day and be truthful about style, the meaning it has to them and what influences it.

I think that I did a good amount of research. For my secondary research I watched three documentaries and watches some clips where people would talk about their fashion sense/favorite designer/hot new trend that they like. I interviewed a few people and asked them to answer some questions about their fashion style. I also did a survey and a focus group to help me decide what would be best for my audience. I think I should of asked some older people because most of the people I interviewed were young and my age range was quiet broad.

I planned out my FMP quiet well however it was very difficult for me as everyone cancelled on me last minute. I arranged an interview with a designer where I would ask her about her brand and her personal fashion sense as well as film some of the products. I also arranged to go to Manchester and film a transgender model that was willing to talk about how her style had changed over time and what fashion meant to her as a model. Because Both of these people cancelled on me I decided to go ahead and film an End of year fashion and fashion photography interview and ask people there about their personal style and what influences it. I should of made a plan considering what would have happened if people cancel on me.

My primary target audience was anyone who was interested in fashion. As my film is all about style. My secondary audience was females 15-40. I think that my film could have appealed to the target audience better if I had more interviews. However the film did show people that were both young and mature and I did an interview with a mature woman. In addition a lot of different ethnicities were shown in the film rather that just one race. I filmed some of the clothes and exhibition at Pakistan fashion week but I did not include it in my film as I feel like it focus on one culture specifically and If I added it in I would have to also add more footage of shots specifically focusing on one culture.

engaged. One thing that would of made my film more interesting is if I had more interviews so that the audience could see different people style and their influences.

One of the things my peers said in my feedback is that some of my sound quality was not clear, so I used effects to try and cancelled out the loud ambient noise in the background. I also slowed down the shots where the designers/ artist/ photographer’s names were being showed so that the audience had more time to read it.

I used editing to improve the sound and make the film more interesting. I added transitions to make the film more smooth and interesting. I also edited on the text onto the screen so people could clearly read what they were saying.
